Redesigning an already existing website

Scott Township Firehall's website hasn't seen a revamp in decades. It was finally time to bring a more friendly user to the table that took accessibility into consideration. A modern design that was user-friendly was necessary to attract new volunteers and to engage community members more.

Research

After polling volunteer members of the firehall, there was a 90% agreement that the website needed redone. The dated design and cumbersome navigation, as articulated by several respondents, no longer reflected the department's professionalism and dedication to serving the community.

The average age for the users polled was 46, so a simplistic design was necessary to get the most convenient experience for the targeted age demographic.

It is evident that the current iteration fails to meet the diverse needs of the firehall's stakeholders, hindering both information dissemination and community engagement. Therefore, the resounding call for a website redesign necessitates immediate action, ensuring the firehall's online presence aligns with its commitment to excellence.

Previous Website

The previous website lacked any architecture, and was visually unappealing; it had been long overdue to freshen up the website so that the firehall could retain more members and promote more events. Also, as you can see, the visibillity of this website was extremely hard to look at.

Digital Wireframes

My main goal with the lo-fi mockups was to address the architecture issue. I wanted a matrix model so that the user could access any part of the website, anytime they wanted to. The following image is the entire website where you can see the user can access any page. Every page was designed to look and feel similar intentionally so that the user didn't feel overwhelmed (the middle being the home page).

High Fidelity Prototype

The final high-fidelity cleaner user flow for ordering healthy food and checkout. It also met user needs for a pickup or delivery option as well as more customization.

Moving Forward

While designing the new Scott Township Firehall Department's website, I learned that less is more, more often than not. You have to consider what demographics you are targeting, and my biggest concern here was age.

Next Steps

1. Conduct another round of usability studies to validate whether the pain points users experienced have been effectively addressed.

2. Add more to the simplistic design; make it even more visually appealing

3. Look into designing an app for the firehall
